House fire in Kilkenny

FIRE services battled a fire that tore through the roof of a house this evening.

The blaze broke out on Main Street Street in the town of Gowran, 13 kilometres from Thomastown, Co Kilkenny. There were no injuries reported and the house was understood to be vacant.

Roads in Gowran, including the main street, were closed off for a period while the fire engine units from nearby Thomastown Station and Kilkenny City dealt with the blaze, which broke out around 8pm.

The fire had been extinguished shortly after 10pm, and road closures remained in place for a short while afterwards.

Gardai said they would be conducting a full inquiry into the cause of fire, but that initial indicators were that it was not suspicious.
