An elderly man died in a house fire in Co Kilkenny yesterday.

Emergency services were alerted about 7pm and rushed to the scene in the small village of Knocktopher, outside Thomastown.

A man in his 70s was discovered dead in the property. Last night, the scene was preserved for a technical examination.

Gardaí launched an investigation and the office of the State pathologist was contacted.

A Garda spokesperson said no one else was injured in the incident and they were appealing for witnesses.

Cllr David Kennedy told the Irish Independent that the man's death came as a "massive shock" to the entire community.

"It really came as a huge blow to me as I knew the man personally. I understand that his family and loved ones are only learning of this devastating tragedy.

"My heart goes out to them and I wish to offer my deepest sympathies to them."

Anyone who may have been passing the area at the relevant time is asked to contact gardaí in Thomastown station on 056 7754150.
