Hospital's staff absenteeism hits 20pc

ABSENTEEISM is running at up to 20pc among HSE staff, new figures show.

One-in-five general support staff at Louth County Hospital called in sick on any given day in February. According to a Healthstat report, one-tenth of the hospital's 70 nurses were off sick on any day in the same month.

The overall absenteeism rate was running at under 8pc.

The survey found Louth County Hospital having the worst absenteeism amongst 32 evaluated. Rates at Cavan General Hospital and the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise were also poor.

Figures for the Midland Hospital show that the absenteeism rates among "other patient and client care" standing at 14pc.

The overall absenteeism rate at Portlaoise was just under 8pc.

Figures for Cavan General Hospital show that absenteeism among its 316 nurses was running at 10pc.

Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin described the €500m annual bill for sick leave as "unsustainable".
