Horse fair back in saddle but with strict new rules
THE Smithfield horse fair in Dublin is to be held twice a year following a breakthrough in talks over the closed monthly market, writes Treacy Hogan.
New by-laws to regulate the fair were agreed yesterday mean ing anyone taking part in the fair will have to register with Dublin City Council in future, giving their PPS number and paying a fee of €10 per horse.
The number of fairs is being limited to to just two a year, with them being held in March and September.
The by-laws will become law if passed by a full council meeting in January.
The chairman of the council's Casual Trading Committee, councillor Gerry Breen, welcomed the agreement and said it was a good outcome for the city, businesses in Smithfiled and local residents.
