Historic thatched home saved after arson attack
A MOTHER battled to save her thatched cottage which was set alight in an apparent arson attack.
The shocked woman battled to save her historic Portmarnock home after its thatched roof went on fire on the hottest day of the year.
A neighbour said he saw a gang set the thatched roof alight from the roadside, before heading towards the beach.
The woman who owns the house, a mother of four who did not want to be named, said she was shaken and shocked that people could do this to somebody's home.
"Absolute thugs did this. There's no other word for them," she said. "They just lit the fire and walked off like nothing had happened."
The woman said: "If it wasn't for those people who just stopped and got out of their cars to help, we would have lost the house. Without doubt, it would have been destroyed.
"Thank God there are some good people in the world. I didn't get a chance to thank them properly – they were so good and kind. I handed them all pots of water and one man had the hose – they were at it until the fire brigade arrived."
There was massive garda presence at the packed beach in Portmarnock yesterday, as they stopped and searched people's bags for alcohol.
