High Court to rule on blood transfusion for baby reporters

The High Court is to rule today whether a baby girl born prematurely a week ago should receive a blood transfusion.

The baby, who weighs less than one kilogram, was born in the Coombe hospital in Dublin to Jehovah's Witness parents, who have refused to agree to a blood transfusion should it become necessary.

While the baby is not at any immediate risk, there is a fear she may develop an infection that would require the hospital to perform an emergency transfusion.

Members of the Jehovah's Witness church believe that passages of the Bible forbid blood transfusions. Members who do accept such treatment can be cast out of the church.
