THE National Women's Council of Ireland has warned that the crippling cost of childcare, and reluctance for couples to have children because of financial uncertainty, will hamper our economic recovery.

It said the Government must ramp up investment in early childhood programmes with more supports put in place to help women enter employment.

The council was responding to the Irish Independent/ Today FM Behaviour and Attitudes survey which found that one in four couples believe they are too poor to start a family.

Rolling investment in programmes to help defer the high cost of raising a child should be put in place, particularly around childcare, director Orla O'Connor said. The survey is a wake up call for the government," she said.
