AN HEROIC Dad drowned after jumping in to seas off the Wexford coast after two of three teenage boys got into difficulties while swimming.
The tragic accident occurred at 12.40pm in the holiday village of Courtown when three 14-year-old boys went for a swim in the mouth of the harbour - one of whom was his son.
The man, who is in his late 30s, dived in to the icy waters, when he saw the teenagers were getting in to difficulty.
The village was packed with people due to the good weather.
According to those on the scene, the man, managed to help the teenagers to safety to the nearby beach but he then got into difficulties while in the freezing waters. The teenagers who made it to the beach were treated for shock and hyperthermia by the emergency services.
Members of Courtown RNLI lifeboat were on the scene within a couple of minutes in a desperate attempt to save the man. They were assisted by members from the local sailing club, gardai the Irish Coast Guard helicopter and a local doctor.
It is understood that the teenagers were part of a group of teenagers from south Co Dublin who were due to take part in a football match in the county over the weekend.
Despite desperate efforts to revive the man he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital for a post mortem examination.
