Heroes buoyed by award
ON a sunny day in August this year, two people, one a 15-year-old boy, the other a mum of three, saved the lives of two people who got into difficulties in two different locations along the east coast.
Brendan Bolger, from Stillorgan, Co Dublin and Carmel O'Toole, from Wicklow, met for the first time yesterday as they, along with 16 other rescuers from 10 near-death incidents, were recognised at Irish Water Safety's National Awards ceremony.
Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government Michael Finneran, who presented the awards, said:
"Tragically, 145 drownings occurred in Ireland last year."
Mr Finneran also presented awards to 41 Irish Water Safety volunteers for teaching swimming, life-saving and water survival and rescue skills.
