Hero saves woman from blaze

A HERO garda who rescued a woman from a house fire was only thinking of saving her, his boss has said, writes Greg Harkin

The officer broke into the blazing house in Donegal Town at 4.45am yesterday to rescue the woman who was already unconscious. The woman, who is in her 30s, had been overcome by smoke.

Gda Supt Leo McGinn told the Irish Independent: "This was typical of the two gardai involved, the garda who entered the house to rescue this woman and his colleague who went to their assistance.

"Thankfully the lady in question was saved. The garda who entered the house is a young married man and he was only thinking of saving her."

The victim of the fire is being treated in Letterkenny General Hospital.
