Hero gardai rescue child (2) from burning Mullingar house reporters

A woman and a two-year-old child were injured in a house fire in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, early today.

Two gardai entered the burning house and rescued the little girl who was trapped in an upstairs bedroom. The woman is reported to be in a serious condition.

Five occupants of the house, the woman, a man and three children aged 13, 7 and 6, escaped through an upstairs window.

All six occupants of the house at Grange Crescent were removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar. Two of the children were subsequently transferred to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

Two members of the gardai were also treated in hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Gardai are investigating the cause of the fire which broke out at 1.50am. The scene has been preserved for technical examination.
