NEW Fine Gael TD Helen McEntee made her maiden Dail speech during a motion on the fodder crisis.

Ms McEntee thanked her party colleagues for their help during the recent by-election caused by the death of her father.

She also remembered working on the farm with her father and said it was fitting she was speaking on an agriculture motion.

Her father, the late Shane McEntee, was the junior agriculture minister until his death before Christmas.

During her brief speech, she praised Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney’s handling of the fodder crisis, saying: “Department intervention has been needed and it has been sought and it has been given.

“Unfortunately it is hard not to get caught out with the weather in Ireland, it’s as predictable and the national lottery numbers.”

Her speech was met with polite applause on the Government benches.
