Patient gets his hospital appointment ... for 2024
A patient has received an appointment for New Year's Day 2024 after being referred to St Vincent's Hospital for neurology treatment.
The potential six-year wait was highlighted in the Dáil by Labour Party leader Brendan Howlin, who read from a letter given to him by a constituent.
He said the man "was very happy" to get a note stating an appointment had been arranged for him at the waiting list triage clinic in the neurology department of St Vincent's Hospital at 9am on January 1, 2024.
"It almost takes the proverbial when the next line asks him to present this letter to the receptionist on arrival and states that if he is unable to make the appointment, it is important he phones to cancel it on the number provided," Mr Howlin said.
The hospital was not in a position last night to clarify whether there is a six-year waiting list, but sources said it would be "very unusual".
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he suspected the date was "an error".
