Health committee will not issue any verdict on proposed legislation
THE Oireachtas Health Committee will not be making any recommendations on changes to the abortion legislation, writes Fionnan Sheehan. But it will hold three days of hearings on the proposed new laws before reporting back to the Government.
But the report will only be a summary of the opinions of experts on the draft Heads of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013.
At its meeting yesterday, the committee discussed how to examine the legislation. It agreed to hold three days of public hearings on May 17, 20 and 21.
"There was broad agreement as to how the meetings will be conducted, with key medical and legal experts to be invited to address the committee," a statement said.
The committee will meet again next Tuesday to discuss the list of witnesses.
