It may only be November but already Independent.ie readers have pinpointed the ideal time to put up your Christmas tree (December 1-10) and now readers have declared fake trees to be the order of the day in a new poll.

A survey found that two thirds of readers who responded planned to have a fake Christmas tree this year.

However, 30pc of people are sticking with tradition and putting up a real tree, saying they wouldn't have it any other way.

A small minority of respondents (5pc) said they were having no tree at all.

It's a debate people are unlikely to be swayed on - fans of the real thing will say there is no substitute for the smell of a fresh tree but those who opt for synthetic trees will point out that they forgo the endless cleaning.
