Gunman robs cash van at shopping centre

A LONE raider made off with almost €18,000 in cash and cheques after holding up a cash-in-transit van.

The robber, armed with a handgun, ambushed staff as the money was being delivered to the Killiney shopping centre in south Dublin at around 10am yesterday. He threatened a security guard before grabbing a box containing €16,000 in cash and €1,700 in cheques.

The raider then sped away in a red Peugeot van, along Rochestown Avenue and into Rochestown Park, before abandoning the vehicle in a church car park in Sallynoggin.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the robbery or to anyone who spotted the van, registration 97 WX 1591, to contact Cabinteely station on 01 6665400 or the garda confidential line on 1800 666111.
