Guantanamo detainees to settle here
THE US Department of Justice has said that two detainees who were being held at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba have been sent to Ireland to be resettled.
The men, who have not been identified at the request of the Government, for privacy and security reasons, are both citizens of Uzbekistan who feared persecution if they were returned there. The resettlement comes after US President Barack Obama announced last January he wanted the notorious prison closed within a year.
Green Party Justice and Foreign Affairs spokesman Ciaran Cuffe said he hoped the two men settled quickly and established a "rewarding new life in Ireland".
