A HIGH-level group set up to advise the Government on the scourge of cyber-bullying is preparing a report to identify gaps in the law.

The Internet Content Governance Advisory Group was established last month to assist the Government to develop policy and laws relating to governing online behaviour in areas that fall under the remit of Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte. The group has now held its first meeting.

The issue of cyber-bullying has hit the headlines after a number of suicides linked to alleged online harassment.

The advisory group will conduct public consultation on issues of internet governance including bullying and harassment online and is to produce a report for Mr Rabbitte in the first half of this year.

Mr Rabbitte welcomed the first meeting of the group, saying: "In positioning Ireland as a global leader in technological innovation and entrepreneurship, it is important that we match this commitment with a commitment to facilitate a safe and encouraging online environment."
