Greens in mourning for founder
A LEADING Irish educationalist and founder member of the Green Party, Maire Mullarney, has died, writes Senan Molony.
A saddened Green Party leader John Gormley led tributes yesterday.
"Maire was a huge influence on the development of the party and her work in the areas of education and language influenced the party greatly," he said.
"She will be remembered affectionately as a loyal and dedicated member of the Green Party and as one of Ireland's most original thinkers."
A nurse, journalist and author, Ms Mullarney was one of the Green Party's founding members. Her bestselling book 'Anything school can do, you can do better' was hugely influential in home education.
She spoke Esperanto, published a book entitled 'Esperanto for Hope' in 1989, and helped found the Irish Family Planning Association.
