BUS Eireann plans to cut its annual fuel bill by €1.5m this year by teaching staff how to drive in an environmentally friendly way.
Having buses in the optimum gear, ensuring the engine is in the most efficient rev range and anticipating changes needed in vehicle speed will help cut fuel consumption by at least 5pc, the company said.
Some 250 drivers have already been trained in eco-driving, an internationally acknowledged method of reducing vehicle fuel consumption by making adjustments to driving style and performance.
Bus Eireann spends around €30m on fuel every year. Cutting consumption would also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
