Government has made ‘solid start’ after first year but more work to do – Enda Kenny

TAOISEACH Enda Kenny has said the Fine Gael/Labour Government has made a solid start in addressing the challenges facing the country but there is more work to be done.

He added that he and his colleagues are working to an end that will result in Ireland’s recovery.

Mr Kenny was speaking at the publication of the first annual report on the Government’s performance in its first year while he added it is committed to restoring economic, financial and political stability.

“Today’s report reflects that priority,” he said.

“Our bank reforms have stabilised the financial system.

“Our jobs initiatives have helped to stabilise the employment situation,” he said.

However, he admitted that “far too many people out of work” despite some encouraging figures today from the CSO.

“We have made a solid start in addressing the many challenges facing the country and ultimately bringing about Ireland’s recovery,” he said.

Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore added: “We still have a long way to go to have the kind of impact on people’s lives that we aspire to, and that they deserve,” he said.

While the focus for the first year in Government was stability, the next year will be recovery, Mr Gilmore added.
