We were told to expect a wet and windy end to the Bank Holiday weekend, but nobody expected winter-like weather conditions to hit the west coast.
Heavy rains and strong winds began to batter the country this afternoon, with the west coast seeing the worst of it.
Met Eireann have issued a Status Yellow Wind Warning for counties Wexford, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.
Gusts of 80 to 100 km/hr are expected and the warning is valid until 10pm on Tuesday night.
Since this afternoon, Galway's Salthill Promenade has been flooded, as well as the Coast Road in Oranmore.
Social media users have also shared video footage of the rough seas in Dingle, Co Kerry.
AA Roadwatch have warned road users in Mayo to be aware of 'dangerous road conditions', particularly in the Belmullet area.
Motorists are also being advised to be particularly mindful of other road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists during high winds.
AA Roadwatch added: "High sided vehicles are especially vulnerable on open or exposed roads".
Forecaster Eoin Sherlock told Independent.ie that the east coast won’t experience as much of the rain, but that blustery conditions will persist across the country.
The outlook for the week ahead then will be changeable, with more wind and rain expected across the country. There will be some sunny spells too, but they will be few and far between.
