A RELATIVE of the US Ambassador to Ireland Dan Rooney has landed one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood.

Rooney Mara has beaten off stiff competition from stars including Natalie Portman to be cast as computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in the upcoming big-screen English-language version of Stieg Larsson's bestseller, 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'.

David Fincher's upcoming adaptation of the best-selling Swedish crime thriller is set for release next year.

Mara previously starred in 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' and Fincher's 'Social Network'. She will join 'James Bond' actor Daniel Craig in the thriller.

Craig plays disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkist, who is hired to investigate a missing person case and convinces computer hacker and private investigator Salander to help him.

The film is based on the first of Larsson's trilogy of Millennium novels, and filming will begin in Sweden next month.

It is understood that Mara's deal includes an option to play the same role in the two sequels, 'The Girl who Played with Fire' and 'The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest'.

Mara's grandfather Tim is a relative of the US Ambassador to Ireland.

President Barack Obama announced that he had nominated Rooney to become US Ambassador to Ireland last year.
