A four-year-old girl has died after a tragic accident in a house that was under construction in Co Tipperary.

Jodie Lawlor Tyrrell (4) from Knockbrack, Cloughjordan, Co Tipperary was killed on Saturday 21.

It's believed the girl was killed after a fireplace fell on top of her while the family were visiting a house that was under construction.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and she was taken to University Hospital Limerick where she passed away.

Local councillor Michael O'Meara said that the community has been left devastated.

"I believe she died when a fireplace fell on top of her. The family are absolutely devastated. It's awful to think that something like this can happen to a child that's so young. It's a big shock for all of us here. I send my deepest condolences to the family."

Councillor Peter Ormond also expressed his sympathies to the family.

"It's absolutely terrible, so tragic. Everyone in the community is stunned. People can't believe that something so tragic could happen to a four-year-old. We all have children and grandchildren and something like this is unimagineable."

Jodie's death is deeply regretted by her mother Jessica; brothers Jayden and Kai, June, Nigel and family; grandparents Ann and Frank, Margaret and Matthew; aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends.

She will be reposing at her residence Cloughjordan on Tuesday evening from 4pm, with Rosary at 8 pm. Private removal on Wednesday morning at 10 O’clock arriving in St Brendan’s Church, Birr for Funeral Mass at 11 o’clock. Burial afterwards in St Cronan's Cemetery Roscrea.
