A four-year-old girl has died after an incident at a Sligo caravan park this afternoon.
Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene at Enniscrone in Co Sligo.
It is understood the child was injured when she was struck by a vehicle.
She was taken to University Hospital Sligo where she has since passed away.
A garda spokesperson said a family liaison officer has been appointed to support the family.
Local Sligo County councillor Michael Clarke said the accident has cast a pall over the area which is a popular holiday spot overlooking Killala Bay on the Atlantic coast.
“It’s a holiday town and there are thousands of people here every weekend,” he said.
“It’s a terrible shock,” he told Independent.ie.
“At a time when a lot of people are enjoying themselves, it’s very upsetting for a lot of people.”
“Condolences to the family, are thoughts are with them,” he said.
A local resident said that the caravan park has many seasonal visitors who return there every summer and know each other. As a result, people are reluctant to speak about the tragedy out of respect for the child’s family.
Officials from the caravan park could not be reached for comment.
