A three-year-old girl has died following a car crash in Co Kildare.

The girl, who had been travelling in the car with her father, died following a three-day fight for life with serious injuries in hospital.

Her father, aged in his 40s, was driving the car and is still receiving treatment for his injuries at Tallaght Hospital following the crash.

The accident occurred when two cars collided head-on on the Brannockstown Road, just outside Kilcullen, last Thursday morning.

A Garda spokesman said the incident occurred shortly after 8am.

"The collision occurred when two cars collided at approximately 8.05am on the R413 Brannockstown to Kilcullen Road on Thursday," he said.

Ambulance

"The girl was taken by ambulance to Naas General Hospital and later transferred to Children's University Hospital, Temple Street, where she was pronounced dead earlier today," he added, speaking last night.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Naas Garda station on 045 884300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111, or at any Garda station.

Local Fine Gael councillor Billy Hillis told the Irish Independent he had heard about the accident but was unaware that someone had died.

"I had heard it was a very bad accident.

"I'm very sorry to hear that, it's just very sad for anything like that to happen," added Cllr Hillis.
