A 17 year-old girl was dragged to a green area just 500 yards from the Church in Charleville and subjected to a violent rape in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

The young woman had been socialising earlier in the night in the town and was walking home alone at around 3.30am, when a man began walking behind her and started engaging her in conversation.

It is understood that the man then dragged the young woman to the green area and subjected her to what a garda source described as “a most violent” rape.

The young woman’s mother and another family member became concerned when she had not come home and began walking into town when they met the 17 year-old in a highly distressed state.

Gardai from Charleville were called and the woman was taken to the Cork Sexual Assault Treatment Unit at the South Infirmary.

A team of Gardai immediately sealed off the area and a full examination was undertaken of the crime scene.

Numerous CCTV footage of the town has been viewed by Gardai who are following a definite line of inquiry.

“We are working full tilt on this case,” said the Garda source.

There have been no arrests made yet in relation to the investigation.
