Girl (13) lucky to escape attempted abduction

A 13-year-old girl had a lucky escape when she fought off an attacker.

The teen was assaulted by a man who tried to pull her in to a white van on the road to Clonlyon in Moyclare, Ferbane, Co Offaly.

She was cycling to a friend's house at around 8.30pm on Tuesday when the attempted abduction happened.

"I would say to locals -- be careful, there is a predator in the area," the mother of the girl said.

It is understood that the van, which was described as a "car-type", had a registration that began with 05-D.

Following the incident, the man, described by gardai as middle-aged and small in stature with dark hair and wearing glasses, drove in the direction of Ferbane.

Gardai said they were taking the allegation "very seriously".

They would like anyone with information to contact Birr gardai on 057 916 9710 or the confidential line on 1800 666 111.
