Girl (10) loses fight for life after bike fall

A 10-year-old girl has lost her 11-day fight for life after a freak bicycle accident while she was on holidays.

The Kildare girl died in Cork University Hospital (CUH) yesterday after suffering horrific head injuries when the bike she was riding collided with a stone wall on Sunday, September 2.

The girl, who has not yet been named, had been in critical condition for 11 days and died despite desperate efforts by CUH surgeons to stabilise her condition.

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon, September 2 in the Old Mallow Road-Dublin Hill area of Cork city.

Gardai confirmed that they are now satisfied that no car was involved in the tragedy -- but they have appealed to motorists who may have been on the road at the time to contact them to help their inquiries into precisely what happened.

Gardai are trying to determine if anyone saw the 10-year-old cycling from Whitechurch to the Old Mallow Road in the minutes before the accident.

Gardai have also ordered a full technical examination of the bike the girl was riding at the time of the accident.

The girl was in Cork on a short holiday from her native Kildare.
