Gilmore pours cold water on call for tax changes
TANAISTE Eamon Gilmore has urged caution after Fine Gael demanded a reduction in the income tax burden on working families when the bailout ends.
Fine Gael ministers such as Richard Bruton and Brian Hayes want changes made to the entry point for the top rate of income tax – which currently sees PAYE workers paying an effective 52pc tax rate on wages of just over €32,000. Allowing workers to earn more at the lower rate of income tax would put more money in their pockets.
"I think the important thing is that we are exiting the bailout. This is new territory because we are the first country to be exiting a bailout," he said.
