Gilmore pays tribute to sister of ex-Tanaiste
LABOUR Party leader Eamon Gilmore last night led tributes on the death of Maeve Spring, the sister of former Tanaiste Dick Spring.
Ms Spring (56), a mother of two, died on Monday following a long battle with cancer.
Mr Gilmore said she was a member of a "remarkable" family, which has given more than seven decades of public service to the people of Kerry.
"But her contribution to public life and to the Labour Party extended far beyond her role as a councillor."
Her husband, the late James Sweeney, died a number of years ago. Ms Spring was well-known in political circles as a former long-serving Kerry County Councillor and Tralee Town Councillor. She was also constituency secretary for her brother during his time as a TD.
Ms Spring is survived by her children, James and Mary, and her siblings Dick, Arthur, Donal and Noelle.
