Gilmore gets advice on 'lovely' new French PM
TANAISTE Eamon Gilmore was advised last night by an old colleague that the new French prime minister, who he will meet today, is a "pragmatist".
Independent TD John Halligan said he knows Jean-Marc Ayrault from Waterford being twinned with the French city of Nantes.
"I've met him on several occasions. He's a lovely fella. He'd be a bit of a pragmatist," he told the Irish Independent.
Mr Ayrault was the mayor of Nantes from 1989 until he was appointed as French prime minister last week.
Mr Halligan is a former political colleague of Mr Gilmore's from their days together in the Workers Party.
Mr Gilmore will meet Mr Ayrault for the first time at a meeting of the Labour Party's political grouping in Europe, the Party of European Socialists.
