Giles among guests as fire spoils club party
A HOTEL fire scuppered the 40th anniversary celebrations of a football club.
The event, attended by guest speaker John Giles, was cancelled when a fire broke out in the Westgrove Hotel in Clane, Co Kildare.
Hundreds of people were set to enjoy the night for Clane United.
Around 200 guests who were at a drinks reception before the main event in a side room of the hotel had to be evacuated, as well as 200 guests who were staying in the hotel.
General manager of the Westgrove Hotel Jerry Russell said the hotel intends to do something "very special" to make it up to the club.
It was a "nightmare", said committee chairman Richie Phillips. "We were just about to bring the guests in, then we noticed there was smoke and were evacuated."
"John Giles was such a gentleman that he stayed on and chatted with a lot of club members for a few hours and promised to return," said Mr Phillips.
"He stayed there for the night and chatted to everyone. He was a gentleman. He said he'd be back," he added.
