Gardai are investigating a suspected hit-and-run car incident which has left a General Election candidate seriously injured.

Cllr Willie Crowley was crossing the street in Newbridge, Co Kildare, when he was knocked down. The car failed to stop.

Mr Crowley was rushed to Naas Hospital. Gardai closed Eyre Street, which is known locally as "the back street", as their investigations continued.

Willie Crowley is a native of Clonmel but has lived in Kildare for many years.

"The pedestrian was seriously injured and was taken to Naas General Hospital where his injuries are described as serious," a Garda spokesperson said.

Cllr Crowley was elected to Kildare County Council in May 2014. Last July, he declared for Shane Ross's Independent Alliance for the forthcoming General Election.

Gardai say the car drove away in the direction of Canning Place.

Officers in Newbridge are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have been on the road at that time.
