Gay furious at daughter's drunk driver encounter

GAY Byrne has spoken of his anger after his daughter encountered a drunk driver on the roads over the Christmas period.

The 75-year-old revealed how his daughter, Suzy Byrne, came face to face with a drunk driver in Co Wicklow this week.

She had been driving at night when she noticed a car weaving in traffic.

"The guy stumbled out of his car footless, and was obviously incapable of driving," he said.

But Byrne recounted that the driver escaped prosecution after a passing motorist intervened.

"Someone who happened to know this guy came along. He . . . moved the guy's car from the middle of the road over on to the verge and then put this drunk guy into his own car and drove him away.

"You think this stuff doesn't go on, that people don't get behind the wheel of a car legless drunk any more. But there you are, it is still happening."
