Garrett puts back into new record
AN Irishman has set a new record in one of the sporting world's more unusual disciplines.
And he did it on a route more used to the rumbling of articulated lorries than the sound of runners.
Garrett Doherty (34), from Inishowen in Co Donegal, broke the 10km backwards running record yesterday in the Dublin Port Tunnel.
He completed the course in 42 minutes, 57 seconds, shaving two-and-a-half minutes off the old time. But the feat won't be officially recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as he didn't meet all the strict criteria required.
"We had to record the finish on video and my friend missed it," Mr Doherty said last night.
Yesterday's Dublin Tunnel Run raised around €50,000 for homeless charity Focus Ireland, and it is hoped the race will become an annual event.
