Gardai using CCTV to identify Cork revellers who slashed man in face with bottle

Ralph Riegel

A man suffered horrific facial injuries in a fracas between two groups of revellers.

Gardai are hoping CCTV security camera footage will help identify a group that left a 36-year-old man bleeding and semi-conscious on a pavement in Cork city centre.

The man is stable in Cork University Hospital where he is being treated for severe facial cuts inflicted by a broken bottle.

His injuries are not life threatening but he may need extensive plastic surgery for slash wounds to his cheek, jaw and nose.

Gardai hope to interview him over the weekend about the attack which took place between 12.30am and 1.45am yesterday between Lavitt's Quay and St Patrick's Bridge.

The victim was apparently returning home when he was confronted by three men and two women. He was slashed in a totally unprovoked attack.

After the attack, the victim was left lying on the pavement and the group dispersed in the direction of Bridge Street.

Gardai have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them at (021) 452 2000 or via the Garda Confidential Helpline.
