Gardai are to investigate a complaint under the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act against Irish Independent columnist Kevin Myers.
The complaint was lodged yesterday by the Immigrant Council of Ireland and relates to an article last Thursday.
ICI chief executive Denise Charlton said it considered the article 'Africa is giving nothing to anyone -- apart from Aids' to have been racially offensive and in breach of section 2 of the act.
Section 2 states it is an offence to publish or distribute material, if it is threatening, abusive or insulting and intended to, or is likely to, stir up hatred.
The ICI is also lodging a complaint with the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism.
