GARDAI have questioned a man over a suspected sexual assault on a teenage girl in the toilets at the Galway Races last week.

The 15-year-old was allegedly attacked in the toilets of the Killanin Stand during Ladies Day at the Galway Racecourse last Thursday, August 2.

The incident reportedly took place while the races were ongoing.

The man has been interviewed in relation to the alleged assault and a file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The garda investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Around 37,000 attended the Ballybrit racetrack during Ladies Day this year. The alleged attack took place at 4.30pm when the stadium would have been full.

The attack was the third alleged sexual assault on a teenage girl over the course of one week in Galway.

On Wednesday, August 1, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped in a city centre apartment. The rape reportedly took place in Galway city between 4pm and 7pm on Wednesday.

Three men were arrested in relation to the incident. Two of the men were minors, while a third is aged 19. The two minors were arrested at the apartment in question on Wednesday evening and were held at Galway garda station.

The third man was arrested in the Athlone area on Thursday and was taken to Ballinasloe garda station.

All three were released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Meanwhile, gardai in Ballinasloe are investigating an alleged sexual assault on an 18-year-old woman in the Dunlo Hill area of the town.

The attack occurred in the early hours of the morning over the August Bank holiday.

The young woman was grabbed from behind and assaulted in a laneway as she walked home at 4.30am on Monday morning.

Her attacker then fled the scene on foot.

Gardai are conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident and are reviewing CCTV footage in the area.

Gardai are anxious to speak to witnesses, or residents of the surrounding areas who may have seen anything suspicious.

Anyone who was in the vicinity of Dunlo Hill at the time or who witnessed anything unusual is asked to contact Ballinasloe garda station at 090-9631890.
