A PAKISTANI man is being questioned by gardai about a serious sexual assault on a vulnerable young woman with learning difficulties.

The suspect, aged 31, was detained by detectives in Dublin city yesterday.

He was being held last night at Kevin Street garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows gardai to hold him without charge for up to 24 hours, excluding rest periods.

The arrest followed weekend inquiries in the south city after gardai located an apartment, off the South Circular Road, where they believe the assault took place on Wednesday afternoon.

Gardai believe the attacker singled out his victim after approaching at least two other women earlier that afternoon.

The victim, who is in her mid- 20s, was sexually assaulted in the flat, after she had been jogging along the South Circular Road towards Harrington Street. She had been jogging with her mother for some time when they became separated.

Gardai said this was not unusual and the two would then meet again later. She returned home after being missing for about an hour and told her parents about the assault.
