Gardai probe shocking assault on homeless man

GARDAI have confirmed they are investigating an incident during which a group of young men, thought to be third-level students, urinated on a homeless man sleeping in an archway in Dublin.

Witnesses reported that the man was in a sleeping bag outside a shop at the top of Grafton Street close to St Stephen's Green when the incident occurred at around 11.30pm one evening earlier this week.

"A group of so-called students went over and urinated on top of the guy, who was asleep," a taxi driver who witnessed the incident said.

"I had to get out of my taxi and run them out of it."

The taxi driver added that he was shocked when he confronted the group of young men and they laughed.

"I'll never forget the face of that unfortunate human being covered in urine," he said.

Gardai confirmed the incident occurred and that they are investigating it.

Other callers to RTE's 'Liveline' show claimed that the assault was linked to mid-week promotional events for students in the city centre and near college campuses.
