Gardai are investigating the sudden death of a 65-year-old man at a house in Ashbourne, Co Meath.

An ambulance was called to the house at Johnswood Drive in the town at around 12.30am yesterday.

However, the man was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood the man was the victim of an assault and died from injuries sustained in the altercation.

Gardai arrested a 33-year-old man as part of their investigating and he was last night being held at Ashbourne Garda Station.

It is believed both men were known to each other.

The body of the dead man was removed from the house and brought to the Dublin City Morgue where a post mortem will be carried out today.

Gardai sealed off the house for a technical examination and the State Pathologist was notified,

Anyone who may have information about the death is asked to contact Ashbourne Garda Station on 01 8010600.
