Gardai on alert as notorious rapist Murphy returns
CONVICTED rapist Larry Murphy returned to Ireland last week and is being monitored at all times, according to garda sources.
The notorious criminal, who served 10 years of a 15-year sentence for a brutal attack on a woman in the Wicklow Mountains, was released from prison last August.
He returned to the country last week after spending eight months in Europe.
Murphy, from Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, flew into Dublin last Wednesday night from Girona in north-east Spain.
The 46-year-old, who kidnapped his terrified victim in Carlow before repeatedly raping her, was also a suspect in the disappearance of several young women in the 1990s.
Murphy was spotted at Dublin Airport looking tanned and dressed in a green T-shirt and jeans.
It is believed he has returned to the country to apply for a new passport after his old one was stolen in Spain.
Last night garda sources said Murphy would only be in the country for a few days in order to arrange for his new passport to be issued, after which time he would return to Spain.
Officers attempted to allay fears by confirming they are monitoring his whereabouts at all times.
