Gardai: no criminal damage to Dana's car tyre after she claimed it was tampered with
AN INVESTIGATION by gardai has found no evidence of criminal damage to a tyre on a car belonging to Dana Rosemary Scallon.
The independent presidential candidate had claimed that the tyre had been deliberately tampered with in order to hurt her.
Her car experienced a blowout on the M4 motorway in Co Kildare last week as she was being driven back to Dublin after campaigning in Leitrim.
However, Garda forensic experts believe the damage was most likely caused by the car being driven while the tyre was under-inflated or flat.
Her husband Damien, who was driving the Peugeot 508 car at the time, said that when the tyre blew he swerved to avoid other vehicles before struggling to stop safely on the hard shoulder.
"It was quite a terrifying, horrifying moment," he said. "When you see the tyre it kind of sends home to us what were they trying to do -- injure us or murder us? Along with doing that, they could have killed someone else."
Dana was asleep in the back seat of the car at the time.
Her lawyers later filed an official complaint with gardai of criminal damage to the tyre.
