Gardai left gang file in shop, Ahern tells Dail
Justice Minister Dermot Ahern has confirmed in the Dail that a confidential garda document relating to a suspected major crime gang in Dublin city centre was left unattended by an officer in a city store.
The document, which outlined links between alleged gang members, had been taken to the premises by the garda for specialised photocopying.
But it was later established that a member of the staff made contact with a suspected criminal about its contents.
Fine Gael justice spokesman Alan Shatter named the store in the Dail as Reads of Nassau Street and described the incident as an extraordinary example of complete incompetence.
It is understood that the document was later retrieved by members of the force's organised crime unit.
