Gardai investigating after woman (80s) killed in house fire in Limerick
Gardai are investigating after the body of a woman was discovered following a fire at a house in Limerick tonight.
The woman, who is "elderly" according to gardai, was found after firemen quenched the blaze at O'Curry Street, shortly before 9pm.
A spokesperson for Limerick City Fire and Rescue said they received an emergency call to the house at 8:06pm.
Three fire tenders attended the scene and the blaze has been extinguished.
The elderly woman was discovered and taken out of the house by fire officers but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a Garda source the woman's body remains at the scene and the house has been preserved by gardai.
A detective unit has been dispatched to the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
The victim of the fire is believed to be aged in her 80s.
A post mortem is expected to be carried out at University Hospital Limerick later.
"The woman's body remains at the scene. The area has been preserved. The investigation is at its very early stages," said a Garda source.
Gardai at Henry Street, which is located near the scene, are investigating.
