Gardai investigate rape in public toilets

RALPH RIEGEL

GARDAI are investigating the rape of a young woman in a public toilet.

The attack occurred in a toilet in Kanturk in north Cork shortly before 4pm yesterday.

The woman -- who is in her early 30s -- is understood to have been attacked after she went to use the facility. She was unaccompanied and was apparently attacked by a man lying in wait inside the toilet block.

After the attack, the man fled on foot.

The distraught woman stumbled out of the toilet block and raised the alarm with a passerby who notified gardai.

Detectives took a statement from the woman before she was transferred to the special sexual assault treatment unit at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital.

Kanturk gardai have appealed for anyone who may have spotted suspicious activity near the public toilets in the town to contact them.
