GARDAI are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a young woman in a city park as she walked home.

The 24 year old woman is said to be "very distraught" over the attack which she said occurred shortly after 2am as she was walking home in Ballyphehane on Cork's southside.

The woman was walking past a city park when she said she was grabbed from behind and dragged over to a piece of ground near a bandstand.

She told gardai she was then subjected to a brutal sexual assault.

Her attacker, believed to be a man in his 20s or 30s, then fled the scene on foot.

Togher Gardai were alerted and the woman was taken to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit of the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH).

Gardai sealed off the scene and began a detailed technical examination.

Detectives have also appealed for anyone who may have spotted suspicious activity in the Ballyphehane area between midnight and 4am to contact them.

Gardai are also checking CCTV footage to determine movements from the park at the time.

Detectives hope to take a detailed statement from the woman later today.

The attack occurred as the woman was walking home having been out socialising with friends.
