Gardai hunt for weapon in murder

Ralph Riegel

GARDAI investigating the brutal murder of mother-of-three Catherine Smart are conducting extensive searches to locate the implement used to batter her to death.

Detectives now believe that the middle-aged woman was struck from behind on the skull with a blunt, heavy implement in the kitchen of her home at Bailick Court, Midleton, Co Cork last Sunday.

Gardai must also decide today whether to bring a man in his late 40s before the District Court. The man was arrested shortly after 4pm on Monday and taken to Midleton garda station for questioning about the precise circumstances of Mrs Smart's death.

Under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, the man can be questioned for a period of 24 hours before he is released or charged.

Given time allowed to the man for rest and sleep while in custody, his period of detention was scheduled to expire in the early hours of this morning.

Mrs Smart (57) was separated but had been in a new relationship in recent times.

Gardai have again appealed for anyone with information to contact Midleton garda station at (021) 463 1324.
