Gardai hold major drugs suspect after €400k haul
GARDAI have arrested a man they believe is a major drugs importer, supplying the market in the West of Ireland.
The suspect, aged 49, was detained by members of the garda national drugs unit last night after a significant haul was found in a house.
The seizure was made in Tuam, Co Galway, following an operation led by the national unit and backed up by local gardai and customs officers.
They found 20kg of cannabis herb, with a street value of around €400,000, which they believed had been intended for distribution on the streets in the west.
Two men were arrested, including the prime suspect, who has been a key target for the past few years and is thought to be behind several large drugs importations.
The man has also been targeted by the Criminal Assets Bureau. The second suspect is aged 41.
They were taken to Galway garda station for questioning under drug trafficking legislation and can be detained without charge for up to seven days.
